Indications:
Treatment of hypertension (HTN) or edema if hypokalemia occur on hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) alone, or when a thiazide diuretic is required and cannot risk hypokalemia. May be used alone or as an adjunct to other antihypertensives, such as β-blockers.
Dosage and Administration:
• Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• Take the medicine with a glass of water.
• Triamterene-H may be used alone or as an adjunct to other antihypertensive drugs, such as beta-blockers.
• If you have liver or kidney problems )especially in geriatrics(, talk to your doctor, since your dose of this medicine may need to be different.
• Serum potassium levels must be monitored at frequent intervals especially in patients first receiving triamterene-H, when dosages are changed, or with any illness that may influence renal function.
Contraindication:
• Hypersensitivity to triamterene, hydrochlorothiazide, or to any of the excipients.
• Anuria, acute and chronic renal insufficiency or significant renal impairment.
• Pre-existing elevated serum K+ (hyperkalemia, greater than or equal to 5.5 mEq/liter).
• Potassium sparing agents (eg, spironolactone, amiloride, or other formulations containing triamterene).
• Potassium salt substitutes.
• Potassium supplements (except with severe hypokalemia).
• Addison’s disease.
